I used today's day 5 prompt on napowrimo.net. The prompt asks to read Alice Ostriker's poem "The Blessing of the Old Woman, the Tulip, and the Dog and then write a poem almost as a mirror. I found this prompt challenging, but interesting. It was fun making connections with language to three random and unrelated creatures.
the life of the worm, the mother, and the basil plant
rains come
and swell the earth
like a sponge
its mute form
moves and wicks
wet pavement
then sun burns
and twists it like
exposed wires
rains come
and swell her belly
with a child
like a sponge
wicking away
time the mute
birth frays
her body like
exposed wires
rains come
and swell the roots
up the stem to the leaves
wicking the flood
like a sponge
a bruise of rot
burns up the spine
curling leaves like
exposed wires
Love the word "wicking" and all those exposed wires. You did a masterful job bringing these three seemingly unconnected creatures together.
