Happy April and Happy #NaPoWriMo . It's National Poetry Month and it's time to poem some poems.
I didn't follow today's NaPoWriMo.net prompt. Instead, I wandered around on the page and had a hard time writing this first poem of the month. Probably because I came to the page with the expectation to write a poem. Poems are elusive creatures. They must be coaxed, not forced, and so here is my poem:
Could’ve
When I come to the page
with the intent to build a poem,
I sliver and scratch a kindling
of words from thin strips of ink.
I can't fill a page with my fire,
all my words wet into puddles
of meaning grudging the labor
of should, would, supposed to.
I could've built, I could've crafted,
I should be here building my life
with poetry, but I am writing a poem
about not writing a poem when
I should have
written a poem.
